02 Statement of Intent COMPLETE

Brief 3: Magazine and online

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

Statement of Intent – Magazine

My brief is to produce the front covers and contents pages of the first two editions of a new style magazine that is being launched by Condé Nast, as well as two web pages for the accompanying website. My magazine Archive, is a fashion and lifestyle publication aimed at a primarily 16–25-year-old audience. The magazine will represent creativity, individuality, and everyday style. My research into similar Condé Nast publications, such as Vogue, influenced my decision to create Archive as a modern, youth-oriented brand that features a more authentic and diverse approach to fashion. The first issue will follow an urban theme, using a city backdrop, vibrant lighting, and a bold fashion aesthetic to reflect the creativity found in everyday environments. The second edition will contrast this with a more classy and minimalist approach, using clean compositions, neutral colour palettes, and elegant styling to connote sophistication. These contrasting mise-en-scènes will allow me to establish a strong, recognisable brand identity across both covers while showcasing different variations fashion. In terms of representation, Archive will promote inclusivity by featuring models from different genders and identities. The magazine will highlight creativity and individuality rather than focusing on a single ideal of beauty. Through my choice of models, costume, and setting, I aim to challenge restrictive stereotypes within fashion media. To attract the target audience, the covers will use eye-catching typography, and modern composition. The masthead Archive remain consistent across both editions, using a serif fontBoth my covers and contents pages will include different colour schemes, costumes, makeup, photos and social groups, which will make the mise en scene different.

Statement of Intent – Website

The Archive website will maintain a strong sense of branding through consistent  colour palette, and typography, mirroring the aesthetic established by the magazine covers. The site will feature a minimalist yet stylish layout with a black, white, and muted beige colour scheme to connote sophistication, while bold accent tones will differentiate between the urban and classy themes of each issue. The Archive masthead will appear at the top of every page in bold, reinforcing brand identity and continuity across the print and online formatThe homepage will act as the main promotional hub for the magazine, highlighting key articles, cover features, and exclusive interviews with emerging creative talent. The second linked page will focus on lifestyle and fashion content, offering styling advice and current top choices chosen by Archive directors making the experience feel more professional and personalised to viewers. Interactive features such as contact forms, videos, and embedded social media posts will encourage audience participation, reflecting the expectations of a digitally active 16–25-year-old readership.  Advertisements will be carefully selected to align with interests of the target demographic, such as designers or current popular companies circulating the media. These will appeal to a the 16-25 audience, supporting Archives message of fashion as creativity and individuality being shared amongst the media. The audio-visual element of the website will consist of a short-form video interview with a young designer or creative discussing how they express identity through style. This will add an engaging, authentic tone to the website and meet the brief’s requirement for original audio-visual content. The integration of video and photography will appeal to an audience interested in visual storytelling through platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Finally, links to Archives sociial media accounts will appear in both the header and footer of the site, allowing readers to share content and remain connected with the brand across multiple platforms. This cross-platform strategy will reinforce Archives identity as a creative, modern, and accessible fashion and lifestyle magazine.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

To link Archives print and digital products, the magazine covers and contents pages will include calls to action encouraging readers to visit the website for exclusive articles, videos, and behind-the-scenes content. Scannable QR codes will be incorporated on the contents pages, directly connecting readers to the relevant online material. The website will feature pop-up prompts promoting subscriptions to the magazine. This cross-platform integration ensures the brand functions effectively across print, web, and social media, demonstrating the digitally convergent nature of modern media production and enhancing audience engagement. Both are revenue making, through purchasing the magazine on the physical print however online agdvertisment and brand connections.
